I don't have any Mac experience so I'll speak of Windows. And after many attempts to do it this way and failing I opened the hard drive not advised if you want to continue using this hard drive it turns out that the head inside of the hard drive was stuck.

I then do this and after the installation is complete my ps4 turns off and goes straight back into that same screen. That definitely sounds like your HDD bricked on you. My son's PS4 did the same thing. The reader arm in the hard drive was stuck. There are several youtube videos that give advice on how to try and save the hard drive if it is just a stuck arm.
